As we approach the season of caps, gowns, and the triumphant sounds of Pomp and Circ*mstance, we must reflect on the profound beauty of graduation as leaders in higher education. I encourage you to view this annual milestone not just as the culmination of your students' academic achievements but as a vibrant testament to the transformative power of education.Graduation is more than a ceremony; it is a powerful manifestation of our institutional missions and the palpable impact of our collective efforts. It represents the beauty of growth, the strength of perseverance, and the boundless potential of our students. This event renews our commitment to educating, inspiring, and empowering the next generation of leaders. In your roles, you have the unique opportunity to make each graduation a moment that resonates deeply with every attendee. Embrace the aesthetics of the ceremony—the regalia, the speeches, the setting—as each element contributes to the grand tapestry of this celebration. However, the true beauty lies in the individual stories of your graduates; each diploma is a unique narrative of challenges overcome, knowledge gained, and dreams just within reach. As leaders, you can enhance this beautiful experience by:Creating Connection: Use graduation to highlight the relationships formed between faculty, staff, and students and the supportive environment fostered by your institution.Emphasizing Impact: Showcase the tangible impacts of your programs through student success stories, reflecting both the academic and personal growth achieved.Planning with Purpose: Each element of the ceremony should be intentional, from the speakers you select to the messages conveyed, ensuring they align with your institution's values and vision. Graduation is not just a ceremony; it can be a transformative experience that inspires your graduates and all those in attendance. It is a chance to broadcast the profound beauty of education and its power to foster change and development. As you guide your institution forward, let the beauty of these moments remind you of why we do what we do and the essential role education plays in shaping a brighter future.

It’s not always black and whiteYesterday the Vice Chancellor of SMU, Prof, P. Mbati, in the company of the Senior Management Team, Middle Managers and Students’representatives in collaboration with the Director Internationalisation SMU opened an exciting debate “To Rank or not to Rank”Exciting presentations were made by QS, Times Higher, Asia Rating agency and researchers in the field of Higher Education such as Professor Sioux Mackenna from Rhodes University etc One thing remained constant, it is important for institutions to deepen the impact of their strategies in Teaching, Learning, Research and Community Engagement. To continuously improve in their niche areas and seek clout and dominance in their niche, to never change their mission and ethos to fit that of higher education rating agencies. Rating happens automatically when one continually operates in their mission. Strategy, systems, processes, acculturation, graduateness and responsiveness and relying on institutional data for reflective practices, are all important aspects of this journey to ranking SMU is commended for the effort of bringing all stakeholders into this exciting debate 👏👏👏

This is an outstanding achievement which is also underpinned by training staff and graduate students to become trauma-informed and anti-racist. Wellbeing and productivity rise when students and staff treat one another in a compassionate and person centred manner. Interpersonal mindfulness (the topic of my recently completed PhD) facilitates the qualities of empathy and self-compassion which are essential for productive and nurturing communities.

Our Fall 2023 semester is nearing its end here in Newark. We would like to highlight the accomplishments achieved by our industrious student organizations; all made possible through our collaborations with our remarkable employer partners and the support & dedication of our OCM team.We have over 14 student-led organizations. Here is a brief summation of the value a few have added to the student body over the past several months:BASE Rutgers Newark hosted a 5-week Excel workshop, which culminated in participants receiving a formal certification upon successful completion of the comprehensive exam.ALPFA Rutgers-Newark spearheaded several office visits to companies such as Accenture, as well as certification sessions.Rutgers Real Estate Society led the way to an exclusive office visit to PGIM.Rutgers Undergraduate Women in Business showed their dedication to the Newark community through several drives and volunteering events, in addition to collaborations with local businesses.Rutgers Finance Society(RFS) led a plethora of informative events, including some hosting RBS alumni that offered invaluable industry insight.Lastly, all the organizations periodically come together for co-sponsored events. A recall to RUWIB's Corporate Coffee Chat had the support of numerous clubs, including Marketing and Management Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. (FBLA), BASE Rutgers Newark, Rutgers Finance Society, ASCM Rutgers-Newark.To our students: know that your involvement on campus is priming you for your involvement in life. You are leaders, you are change-makers, and you are RBS Strong. We look forward to all that you will accomplish, next term and beyond.#RutgersBusiness #RutgersSuccess #CareerDevelopment #StudentSuccess #BusinessSchool #EmployerPartnerships #CareerManagement #StudentOrganizations #ProfessionalDevelopment #NetworkingSuccess #RutgersAlumni #BusinessLeadership #JobPlacement #CorporatePartners #SuccessStories #CareerOpportunities #BusinessNetworking #BusinessEducation #JobSearchTips #CareerSupport #RBSOCM #RutgersBusinessSchoolOfficeofCareerManagement #RBSNewark #RBSStrong

It’s been challenging and at times frustrating, but yet undeniably rewarding as I have made new connections and come across some amazing souls. I’m grateful to have started this pursuit of acquiring more knowledge and immersing myself in the complex world of policy-making! One step forward towards making meaningful and, most importantly, impactful change!#UBC #publicpolicy #MPPGA

Postdoctoral research fellow roles, by their grant-based and fixed-term nature, are considered non-permanent employment at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and many medical schools and universities worldwide.Such roles can be challenging, especially for early-career scientists with family responsibilities. Limited job security and institutional support, the illusion of career progression, financial instability, insufficient pro-family benefits and perks, work-life balance and relocation issues are but some of the more widely known challenges.Motivated by their pursuit of science and genuine desire to contribute to human knowledge, PhD graduates often find themselves blindsided. That few postdoctoral research fellows receive long service and other annual awards that are given out at various levels in the university is not surprising, given the short tenure of their employment.Despite the odds, many postdocs, intrinsically motivated by a passion for science, still give their best to science and to other colleagues, beyond the paycheck. These are the researchers who deserve the Dean's Award that I had the honour to receive in November 2023.Postdoctoral research fellows at Nanyang Technological University Singapore and a small number of universities are fortunate to have an available progression to senior research fellow and principal research fellow. But how else could a university recognise, reward and retain the invaluable scientific contributions of postdoctoral research fellows? This is the challenge I posed to the Administration when I received the Dean's Award for Administration. Here is my video-recorded response to receiving the award.

Here are a few observations I have made while working in Higher Education:1. Some "Professionals" really aren't professional in any way...at all.2. Just because people possess numerous degrees and serve in leadership capacities, while holding great titles or positions does not mean that they know how to lead, can develop people, are capable, competent, or effective at their jobs, or can think critically. In some cases people are in leadership due to good connections.3. The system of higher education must find better ways to utilize and develop their younger staff. Younger professionals are the future of higher ed and they have a myriad of interesting ideas, remarkable solutions, and valuable insights that can propel institutions forward.4. Higher Education has so much opportunity for innovation, creativity, and numerous chances to become (and remain) relevant. It just doesn't use it. 5. In higher education, mentorship and advocacy are the keys to advancement.
