How long does prior authorization take for medication at UnitedHealthcare? ›

The request will be decisioned no later than the 10th business day from receipt of the request.

You can get an extra refill of your medication through home delivery or a retail pharmacy. Please go online to “My Prescriptions” at optumrx.com or call the number on the back of your ID card and use the IVR phone system to order the one-time supply.

Using your NHS App or account

You can order a repeat prescription using the NHS App or by logging into your account on the NHS website. If you're asked to nominate a pharmacy, you can only nominate a high street pharmacy. You'll be able to collect your medicine in person when it's ready.

Starting in Q3 2023, UnitedHealthcare will eliminate nearly 20% of current prior authorizations for common procedures or prescriptions.

Option for online prescription service through telehealth

Telehealth, sometimes called telemedicine, allows your healthcare provider to care for you without an in-person office visit [6,7].

How do doctors prescribe medication online? Before prescribing a new medication, your online provider will ask you about your symptoms or concerns. They will discuss your medical history with you and other drugs or supplements you are currently using. Note that prescriptions are at the provider's discretion.

Ordering prescriptions online is one of a range of online services practices are required by contract to provide and to promote. Online services can be accessed via a smartphone, tablet, or computer. There are a range of benefits for practices and for patients when patients order prescriptions online.

Taking into consideration the complexity of a prior authorization request, the prior authorization process selected by a healthcare provider, requirements set out in individual health plans, and any subsequent appeals process, a prior authorization (PA) can take anywhere from same day to over a month to process.

Prior Authorization is when the Plan reviews services before you receive them to decide if they are medically necessary (See Medical Necessity FAQ for more information about what is medically necessary. The Plan reviews the type of care, the need for that care, and the place of care.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan generally completes the review within 30 calendar days. However, depending on the nature of the review, a decision may take up to 60 days from the receipt of the claim dispute documentation. We'll contact you if we believe it will take longer than 30 days to render a decision.
